Why not <b>make a bookmark</b>. They are really useful when children start <b>reading chapter books</b> and make a great <b>personalised present </b>too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz6yWKFmNoHKFDKOZMTIl9FATwg5GW2fyJ7szASkbUQsE7hlzatNUUyHVjVhKxTsSj2yGCU8cg4-zGv236v3QnkZsgnC9djVQtF2ZiJDw8XDYRUu8hgrmiEUlrwMMP7ejccmb9hjvJsMbt/s1600/bookmarks+Roald+Dahl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz6yWKFmNoHKFDKOZMTIl9FATwg5GW2fyJ7szASkbUQsE7hlzatNUUyHVjVhKxTsSj2yGCU8cg4-zGv236v3QnkZsgnC9djVQtF2ZiJDw8XDYRUu8hgrmiEUlrwMMP7ejccmb9hjvJsMbt/s640/bookmarks+Roald+Dahl.jpg" width="448" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
The Fairy has loved listening to some of the easier Roald Dahl stories at bedtime - who wouldn't like hearing about a chocolate factory! We haven't moved onto some of the more challenging stories like Matilda yet but as she grows up I hope to. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My favorite quote from Matilda is </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
'The books transported her to new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives...she traveled all over the world while sitting in her little room'<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
such a great expression of the enjoyment and knowledge books have to offer. Something I'm keen to share with my children (though thankfully I'm a much nicer parent than Matlida's!!) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When though about what might look good on a bookmark - the Frog thought shapes so I drew some for the children to colour in. The Fairy has a lovely stamping set and wanted to use that.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We thought abut which books we liked and why. The children drew characters from their favorite books to make <b>'I like reading' bookmarks</b>- I love the Frog's Gruffallo, especially the prickles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis6GjVKc0y18a2AGdLdJwP5lrQNc_9enDZlXFgtSqhHAcu49DbDI1sp_yMorGSrt6nhQXQWBAa1T415ZLgUsqwiXu_nBjbTTTk-_zH5VbT_zprJnDpCUS9A7dI3l4yMAsctQY183ZNGL8F/s1600/gruffalo+book+mark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis6GjVKc0y18a2AGdLdJwP5lrQNc_9enDZlXFgtSqhHAcu49DbDI1sp_yMorGSrt6nhQXQWBAa1T415ZLgUsqwiXu_nBjbTTTk-_zH5VbT_zprJnDpCUS9A7dI3l4yMAsctQY183ZNGL8F/s640/gruffalo+book+mark.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Afer they had gone to bed I chose two quotes that I liked - the one from Matilda and one from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP9ZI0JLq3kUeUW9RH2fjaTjHC9rPotmPdFilF9i7XDi1VUmzEk-2pgHnk4SZmQWbVkZ2VhdaXhCHhFZmf1ksdNFQ7wiSBOqk-PC86B0FE06A1rn4E_5kCR7C1x123cj3aKC_Fmujl-g-l/s1600/DIY+quote+bookmarks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP9ZI0JLq3kUeUW9RH2fjaTjHC9rPotmPdFilF9i7XDi1VUmzEk-2pgHnk4SZmQWbVkZ2VhdaXhCHhFZmf1ksdNFQ7wiSBOqk-PC86B0FE06A1rn4E_5kCR7C1x123cj3aKC_Fmujl-g-l/s400/DIY+quote+bookmarks.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As a finishing touch I laminated the bookmarks to make them durable and added some tassels.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Have you made bookmarks with your child? Or how about making a <a href="http://www.thefairyandthefrog.com/2013/04/child-led-books.html" target="_blank">book together</a>?</div>
</div>

Why we think sensory play is great</h3>
<b>It's hands on learning </b>- which is fantastic for learning language. Children are more likely to learn and retain new vocabulary if they experience these words. Talking with a child during sensory play can help new words stick in a child's memory - it makes them meaningful for the child so they are more likely to use those word again. Sensory rich = language rich.<br />
<br />
<b>It's great for mixed ages and abilities</b>. This is means it's great for siblings doing an activity together (something which is very useful in the summer holidays!) or for including children who have a range of abilities<br />
<br />
<b>It can calm and stimulate</b>. Depending on which activity you choose it can calm the senses or wake your child's brain. Be careful which type of activity you try before bed!<br />
<br />
<b>It's fun!</b><br />
<br />
<h3>
Some ideas for sensory play</h3>
<div>
Painting on texture</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
'Why paint on texture not just regular paper?' I hear you ask. Well painting on regular paper is good - we do it alot, but mixing it up adds a different sensory dimensions and it gave the kids something else to talk about - for example they compared textures and sizes. Doing an activity in a slightly different way is great for encouraging creativity and creative thinking as you are seeing the world from a slightly different perspective. And it's fun!</div>

Or the generation after that? The pace of change of technology can be crazy. In a recent survey children were asked about what future technology might look like. One suggestion was that smart phones might be able to communicate smells (possibly a mixed blessing if it came true!) However many of the children asked didn't recognise an original telephone.<br />
<br />
A few weeks ago we were invited to have a sleep over at the Science museum courtesy of BT in celebration of their launching of a 7th Network. I'm really not exaggerating when I say the whole sleep over was absolutely amazing (I'll be reviewing it on the blog soon as well as our chat with Mark Champkins the inventor in residence). Well, you maybe wondering what the 7th Network is as well as what Networks 1-6 are.<br />

The<a href="http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/Plan_your_visit/exhibitions/information_age.aspx" target="_blank"> Information age</a> gallery at the Science museum looks to inspire children (and grown ups too) with exhibits in 6 Networks (The Cable, The Telephone Exchange, Broadcast, The Constellation, The Cell and The Web) looking at how technology has developed over the last 200 ish years.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-size: xx-small;">The original server for the internet</span></div>
<br />
I love how at the start of the world wide web this was the small box (I also love the sticker - the Papa is always telling me off for turn our computer off when he's doing something - imagine turning the internet off!)<br />
<br />
Regular readers will know that being a speech and language therapist in my day job I love communication and how important I think it is, The Papa is a self confessed computer geek so the Information age gallery was a great place to hang.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaK-cZJRFKR_iTOe5N71nfhpkvaBNzeGj6D6aqdC1RWtUfzICXROIfyYGoVdooJKohqFXLKbYwN_YQJzVgkwhQhhB89WZM-G3n1knw0pKnLyVAnAFvzeFDOr9RmHJDX8Chv9HlrBZdvmpX/s1600/science+museum.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaK-cZJRFKR_iTOe5N71nfhpkvaBNzeGj6D6aqdC1RWtUfzICXROIfyYGoVdooJKohqFXLKbYwN_YQJzVgkwhQhhB89WZM-G3n1knw0pKnLyVAnAFvzeFDOr9RmHJDX8Chv9HlrBZdvmpX/s320/science+museum.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This moving exhibit above explains the origins of the cable.<br />
<br />
The gallery is interactive and contains <a href="http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/Plan_your_visit/exhibitions/information_age/app.aspx" target="_blank">apps you can down load.</a> I loved 'after dark' where you can make a comic. Making comics is a great way to develop children's language and literacy skills - it encourages them to sequence events and to think about what other might think or say in a functional and fun way.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.btplc.com/innovation/7thNetwork/" target="_blank">7th Network </a>is a new collaborative website aimed to share ideas about the future of communications - something which I'm sure if the last 200 years are to go by will look very different in the next 200.<br />
<br />
The information age gallery is free permanent exhibit. We'd love to hear what you thought of it if you do visit or what you or your child's predictions are for future technology.<br />

<br />
We love a challenge so when we heard via Net Mums that the insurance comparison website Cavendish Online were challenging bloggers to make a mascot for the company we knew we'd want to join in. Cavensdish like to keep prices low an so don't spend loads on expensive advertising so they can pass the savings onto the consumer. In fact they offer such good value have been recommended by Which and a moneysavingsexpert top pick for ten years.<br />
<br />
As the challenge was all about saving money we thought we'd base our #MakeAMascot craft on<a href="http://www.thefairyandthefrog.com/2012/11/how-to-make-3-easy-handmade-christmas.html" target="_blank"> salt dough</a> - it a great versatile craft that doesn't cost the earth. As part of the challenge we were asked to get quotes for life insurance from Canvedish and another leading online insurance company. My quote from Cavendish was cheaper by £1.39, which although isn't a huge amount over time will add up.<br />
<br />
After along chat with the Fairy about possible options we chose an owl. We love using salt dough and you can find the recipe we like to use by clicking on this <a href="http://www.thefairyandthefrog.com/2012/11/salt-dough-advent-calender.html" target="_blank">link here</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgerlvNyuzEaNBvox8CCRLR7KiNv-FL1SStPAa3SlwgUbvQAtBOzuEC7_un8Mjvi-JIQxOexLGLOL9bdxeodApYIpGxyMo1CscKXi8ZqoM7hToa-v6X3QXaqSjW-Vb9ZDc_ZSu74Fq3JNNX/s1600/cavendish+owl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgerlvNyuzEaNBvox8CCRLR7KiNv-FL1SStPAa3SlwgUbvQAtBOzuEC7_un8Mjvi-JIQxOexLGLOL9bdxeodApYIpGxyMo1CscKXi8ZqoM7hToa-v6X3QXaqSjW-Vb9ZDc_ZSu74Fq3JNNX/s640/cavendish+owl.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We shaped the owl and then popped him in the oven to dry out (you can air dry but it takes ages and I'm just not that patient!) Here's the Frog painting his owl<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV0RIVYTFzxcwvXjig7tFbxeoaXjY7p7-sILxjGHVcgLgrbml3KM6o06b6EKzW5m3k4DrOHRWCVmjrk3p1ZR3I1colYfYRC3qnxr3e8PRepUJFURmpKuJ7-jSgHg9NwNJetHTSETGN2nUh/s1600/painting+owl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV0RIVYTFzxcwvXjig7tFbxeoaXjY7p7-sILxjGHVcgLgrbml3KM6o06b6EKzW5m3k4DrOHRWCVmjrk3p1ZR3I1colYfYRC3qnxr3e8PRepUJFURmpKuJ7-jSgHg9NwNJetHTSETGN2nUh/s640/painting+owl.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After baking, once the owl had cooled we painted the owl and I added 'feathers' and beads for a finishing touch<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYesj7F-lVFNtSCrqBHTWZg5vtcVYTYoBO6q_Ts9L68gKBR9c1w6NFbHwO8W97nQdX-eVIHbUUbWBSccikWA3sgcU7iDX9t7Ta26P1srPOhzOz7KhRetVMUtQGy-tBeQO6kpDJ6rTEP1ez/s1600/beads.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYesj7F-lVFNtSCrqBHTWZg5vtcVYTYoBO6q_Ts9L68gKBR9c1w6NFbHwO8W97nQdX-eVIHbUUbWBSccikWA3sgcU7iDX9t7Ta26P1srPOhzOz7KhRetVMUtQGy-tBeQO6kpDJ6rTEP1ez/s640/beads.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The beads needed superglue so was not safe for little hands to do.<br />

<br />
The Frog currently at the midst of the 'why' stage and was asking 'Why plants need a drink?'. So I thought it might be a good time to do this experiment to show him that they do drink (I am aware that that it didn't actually answer his question but after a day of 'why' it seemed a welcome distraction!). I remember clearly do this experiment with my Dad (although we used celery not flowers).<br />
<br />
Using language to predict what might happen next is a useful skill. Some children find this hard and hands on science is a great way to practice this skill.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpTPP9X9TI5maTaVGOd1H6EPV9kMZZewCa9QCDU415u4NXZh6JCu-bVqjbSzrMJgs493PRB5g5AkiXbGi15D1pKXC1pyhBi1mA4Pzx7z8A6nQEjLpcZsCFckfE_TaSjH4UyL5wUAXvulSq/s1600/flower+experiement.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpTPP9X9TI5maTaVGOd1H6EPV9kMZZewCa9QCDU415u4NXZh6JCu-bVqjbSzrMJgs493PRB5g5AkiXbGi15D1pKXC1pyhBi1mA4Pzx7z8A6nQEjLpcZsCFckfE_TaSjH4UyL5wUAXvulSq/s1600/flower+experiement.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We added food coloring to water, placed some flowers in the water and waited. We asked questions to help us think through what might happen, 'What colour is the water?', 'I wonder what will happen?' etc These are simple questions but help to encourage higher level language skills such as reasoning and prediction.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm3v-sFOBYnx3XdxPQfCwv0gcCy46m3Xr9JcZ7C2Fi09el9XF0XP9J04A-ATOzAhME_t-ybrZjKedwJ68PjP3U1CyQUvcLXnD-7j6DEfDQNvZEJ4do72ZKphKVLwGO9VpFeveQrT3dFoms/s1600/flower+food+coloring+experiment.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm3v-sFOBYnx3XdxPQfCwv0gcCy46m3Xr9JcZ7C2Fi09el9XF0XP9J04A-ATOzAhME_t-ybrZjKedwJ68PjP3U1CyQUvcLXnD-7j6DEfDQNvZEJ4do72ZKphKVLwGO9VpFeveQrT3dFoms/s1600/flower+food+coloring+experiment.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The results were clear after a few hours. We did the experiment just before bed and by the morning the flowers had changed colour. You can find more details about the science behind the experiment here at <a href="http://www.science-sparks.com/2011/09/26/changing-colour-flowers-with-transpiration/" target="_blank">Science Sparks a fab kids science website</a>. There are tonnes of other great experiment there too why not try some out- don't forget to ask 'I wonder what will happen....?'<br />

This week we've choose two posts to share with you.<br />
<br />
Christmas is a great time to make 'family traditions'. Having a '<a href="http://www.muminthemadhouse.com/2014/12/14/putting-together-christmas-eve-hamper-christmas-eve-tradition/" target="_blank">Christmas eve box'</a> Is something that we do - we usually included some Christmas pajamas (meaning the kids are wearing new PJ's in the Christmas morning photo) and a film to watch together. I also love this idea for a eye spy bottle - easy to create and great for quiet play - so important for this time of year. Dabbling Momma has made a<a href="http://dabblingmomma.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/christmas-i-spy-bottle.html" target="_blank"> Christmas themed eye spy bottle</a>.<br />

<div>
Reading the poem 'Snow'by Walter del la Mare with it's beautifully chilly words inspired us to make some easy paper snow flakes. If you would like to check out the book you can find it by clicking on the affiliate link in the picture</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Making the snow flakes is super simple.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First cut a circle (I helped the Fairy and the Frog by doing this step). We found tissue paper worked best.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1P-c66XwAdcqXKYgT7YBU526jmc1_ccW87WT03k3XUDXTn9oOW3yRyGPF4eGDbGtr5149RXCORPFp60zZfEUiIIJbYoRTqMQxN4HVbCFG2EICxW6NMvvLXrLxW4qv_I8EjBXtkVwC1I9d/s1600/making+snowflake+decoration.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1P-c66XwAdcqXKYgT7YBU526jmc1_ccW87WT03k3XUDXTn9oOW3yRyGPF4eGDbGtr5149RXCORPFp60zZfEUiIIJbYoRTqMQxN4HVbCFG2EICxW6NMvvLXrLxW4qv_I8EjBXtkVwC1I9d/s1600/making+snowflake+decoration.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Next fold your paper in half 4 times.Again I did this step (as its important to be exact to get a good result)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1PhBG0aorl8kHeI0m-SyTfG8tCbLilwPn0XQTa6vbtEFl_E8diNrtBNM7WzMFse6bQzLUNuxjJsVI5KDXM11aopL_TT2ECi25LtgYfO-G_vcqiK-cBdkx5Xmu8SASfEEIWOL0hUDR5cSR/s1600/snowflake+craft.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1PhBG0aorl8kHeI0m-SyTfG8tCbLilwPn0XQTa6vbtEFl_E8diNrtBNM7WzMFse6bQzLUNuxjJsVI5KDXM11aopL_TT2ECi25LtgYfO-G_vcqiK-cBdkx5Xmu8SASfEEIWOL0hUDR5cSR/s1600/snowflake+craft.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then get cutting. The Fairy wanted to do more delicate designs so we drew a design for her to cut out.The Frog just liked cutting! It gave lots of learning opportunities to talk about symmetry and predict what the snowflake might look. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_D6Z9Kn50Lm3dAkFS8h2V7m89H-PcYH_0rwkU4XHcmXw7LUiHGLkzQSoPpRF2kgs2BnwDsNrHnFRD8Bw4T33dioFIZGur-QMNV2cRTidY8Wr1mtwExPlCdNuRNhV_O4BoGcd55BI9u8UD/s1600/how+to+make+a+paper+snowflake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_D6Z9Kn50Lm3dAkFS8h2V7m89H-PcYH_0rwkU4XHcmXw7LUiHGLkzQSoPpRF2kgs2BnwDsNrHnFRD8Bw4T33dioFIZGur-QMNV2cRTidY8Wr1mtwExPlCdNuRNhV_O4BoGcd55BI9u8UD/s1600/how+to+make+a+paper+snowflake.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You could hang the flake from a tree or stick them on the window to make it look like it's snowing outside.</div>

It's really easy to do and can help build early math and numeracy skills. We set up a nature table with autumn (fall) themed loose part- conkers, seed heads and squash. Then we added some measuring instruments some scales and a tape measure along with some containers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrmz8ssUKyUiB9NTdi5eeYMxwIte7HjwGRW63VSSR-ZCqLoV7xjmFAbsNNHMCtqER7EpmZuuLSN2LHqOX4f6y_hsigfCU20uhC2WktkTf2MZYFMHj8Rf4uSZZka5Gc_rbZr57FlLK-Oel/s1600/maths+investigation+area.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrmz8ssUKyUiB9NTdi5eeYMxwIte7HjwGRW63VSSR-ZCqLoV7xjmFAbsNNHMCtqER7EpmZuuLSN2LHqOX4f6y_hsigfCU20uhC2WktkTf2MZYFMHj8Rf4uSZZka5Gc_rbZr57FlLK-Oel/s1600/maths+investigation+area.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
We then measured<br />

and compared items. It gave us lots of opportunities to talk about size, shape and weight.<br />
<br />
<b>Possible additions</b><br />
add a clip board, paper and pencil to encourage your child to record numbers<br />
add a simple number line to encourage your child to count objects<br />
include a ruler or some duplo to use as an 'informal measure'<br />
<br />
Have you set up a maths area - please let us know . We would love to see what you've included.<br />

<br />
<br />
When I heard about the charity <a href="http://www.iamsupercapes.co.uk/" target="_blank">I Am Super Capes</a><span id="goog_103877943"></span><span id="goog_103877944"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a> I was keen to get involved. The charity aims to give every child a chance to be a super hero - no matter where they live or what is happening in their lives. You can find out more about them but clicking <a href="http://www.iamsupercapes.co.uk/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I enlisted some help from a very lovely friend (including the use of her sewing machine as mine wasn't working) and we made two capes following the very easy pattern which you can find on he <a href="http://www.iamsupercapes.co.uk/cape-tutorial/" target="_blank">Super capes website here</a>.<br />
<br />
The finished capes look fab - as seen modeled here on Super Ted!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Then all that was left was to post it to Super capes HQ in order that it can be passed on to a small superhero. Can you sew? Finding hidden objects is also a great way to develop collaborative play and science knowledge with young children, Given that pirates are very popular in our house some gold coins were an obvious choice for treasure to hide in ice .<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_5CU43EKxWyZp0sTV9d25XDN5X_GmjjwCtMvb1fR67U-eiK_e41wRChRd9QRT8cSClG-FTmkAUdgLN8x3zPYlyK2epj7lAOvsApWua5j52k6_fI7AZ30qhiTKiHnlpz4CeiZ4vGWTCN6z/s1600/pirate+treasure+ice+play.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_5CU43EKxWyZp0sTV9d25XDN5X_GmjjwCtMvb1fR67U-eiK_e41wRChRd9QRT8cSClG-FTmkAUdgLN8x3zPYlyK2epj7lAOvsApWua5j52k6_fI7AZ30qhiTKiHnlpz4CeiZ4vGWTCN6z/s1600/pirate+treasure+ice+play.jpg" height="640" width="394" /></a></div>
<div>
The Fairy helped me prepare some ice blocks with hidden coins after the Frog had gone to bed. In the morning we revealed the ice, talking about how the water had changed and what it felt like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPSE1wpB8mnVIPApBqEgdGU8TUwhdNO4NeNUXUmL-0Icn88LB7C6z0Kqj7NDcFIU0Nb8MwxuLw4lREUS8F007L-4yT5BBF3chYr84NTur3uDCJ2OYxi5pdURd5hlLJED8UprTWcB6sTRqX/s1600/ice+language+development+activity.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPSE1wpB8mnVIPApBqEgdGU8TUwhdNO4NeNUXUmL-0Icn88LB7C6z0Kqj7NDcFIU0Nb8MwxuLw4lREUS8F007L-4yT5BBF3chYr84NTur3uDCJ2OYxi5pdURd5hlLJED8UprTWcB6sTRqX/s1600/ice+language+development+activity.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The children then worked together to excavate the coins from the ice- talking about what was happening. We used spoon to bash the ice and watched it melt in the autumn sun. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96HyFb3vl5NZ8XdEhZVO3Sr6UkYvVDR69vy6LwvHAZYmmJYFcq-xqr9Ga2SzvpyTli-1gXA49fkHPO-nU9fuvphdf9UxRHsWtbWQ2GJCPNDXM4gst0KELJxIlDV171Tq9rdukGLO7rK0M/s1600/ice+sensory+play.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96HyFb3vl5NZ8XdEhZVO3Sr6UkYvVDR69vy6LwvHAZYmmJYFcq-xqr9Ga2SzvpyTli-1gXA49fkHPO-nU9fuvphdf9UxRHsWtbWQ2GJCPNDXM4gst0KELJxIlDV171Tq9rdukGLO7rK0M/s1600/ice+sensory+play.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
Using open ended questions like 'Look, what happening now?', 'Why do you think that's happening?' and 'What might happen next?' helps children to reflect on the world around them and to make observations and predictions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Extension idea: You could provide the children with some salt to see how that changes the melting process.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As a speech and language therapist I often talk about multi-sensory teaching- children are more likely to learn and retain vocabulary if they experience it. Loose parts play is nothing new. Anyone remember playing with Grandma's button tin when you were little? It is a great way to encourage concentration and creativity. You provide your child with loose 'bits' that can be explored, moved around, combined and experimented with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp4SXSN5tz86GlHSGW2JH4L9_0llWk1cyio-RluDwsrlvVg0iky6sU_UjWP7pYNRmGPqzzPv5rpALWgDZKfeLopoQqRA_ovdxFTe_SYKbIokboA4Doa81BdDFI1ZITqNRFYWxTxhJmW_ao/s1600/shells+and+mirror+loose+parts+play.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp4SXSN5tz86GlHSGW2JH4L9_0llWk1cyio-RluDwsrlvVg0iky6sU_UjWP7pYNRmGPqzzPv5rpALWgDZKfeLopoQqRA_ovdxFTe_SYKbIokboA4Doa81BdDFI1ZITqNRFYWxTxhJmW_ao/s1600/shells+and+mirror+loose+parts+play.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The beauty of loose parts is they can literally be anything, promoting creative thinking. Because the 'parts' are not prescribed as something the play time can be open ended- there is no right or wrong thing to do with the items (encouraging a child to develop their concentration span).<br />
<br />
We have a rather large collection of shells , to which we added some glass beads. I presented them along with a mirror in some glass jars.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYBGjuV5qM7_HejM3_Vkdi5PBEWTbdBXL1KYA1dSWDhlIsFxkFnApik9EnASWq4GrAyqwB0aJaGHXxbhdEPUeXxBLJoYf8cZFCfuY-eZ6EN2FJ7h6_0bbiZOLCxPqUJ6bvz5TjCnCNSWOz/s1600/exploring+glass+preschool+learning.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYBGjuV5qM7_HejM3_Vkdi5PBEWTbdBXL1KYA1dSWDhlIsFxkFnApik9EnASWq4GrAyqwB0aJaGHXxbhdEPUeXxBLJoYf8cZFCfuY-eZ6EN2FJ7h6_0bbiZOLCxPqUJ6bvz5TjCnCNSWOz/s1600/exploring+glass+preschool+learning.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The Frog played with them and enjoyed making patterns, empty and filling the pots. Playing with the items on a mirror The Fairy spotted the play set up as soon as she arrived home from school. Her shells were people and the glass beads we the sea. She created a whole narrative with the loose parts as props.<br />

Its also great<b> hands on way for teaching concepts</b>.<br />
Whilst I was clearing out the Frogs sock draw I remembered a great way of teaching the concepts that was shown to me by a brilliant teacher.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhaUJh_kFK-vxFAFbDiE-mItVv2D9TWjj_iWmNkWnw88S3_323G-tAIJy1vFmNkzdQ_yS1UKgGYretgmuQ8UcNwfaoop4ng_ygkpEpkMo7O7qqkg0PdFxk7bmAHZcwQLNHLBar1K0jIvI0/s1600/stars+and+stripes+language+learning+guessing+game.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhaUJh_kFK-vxFAFbDiE-mItVv2D9TWjj_iWmNkWnw88S3_323G-tAIJy1vFmNkzdQ_yS1UKgGYretgmuQ8UcNwfaoop4ng_ygkpEpkMo7O7qqkg0PdFxk7bmAHZcwQLNHLBar1K0jIvI0/s1600/stars+and+stripes+language+learning+guessing+game.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
You just need some patterned socks (we used <b>stars and stripes</b>), preferably in the same colour scheme and an old box. Cut x shapes for the tips of the socks to fit through.<br />
<br />
Then you can play. Take turn to guess if its stars or stripes (or what ever patterns you have). For children who have language disorders concepts can be difficult to learn so it is best to teach one concept at a time rather than two at once . You can talk about the concept you are teaching and 'not' the concept (e.g. stars vs not stars rather than stripes vs stars).<br />
<br />
After guessing you pull and find out what you have.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The Frog took a while to get hang of the guessing. The Fairy loved it. You could also use this game for teaching colours.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvMu3QGncQifX4VxYdhHcPW89lMIVQoFLV_33EEC6kTSDzYdydsN9EzQx21Tkt7l1ZD-vG5iqOh7VckKHQbjGKl5Ii6NAUJkeFs8ZrU6A-scvh_S1fwnFpdJMViwzzUKG2PaCZMC6yEbli/s1600/airport+dramatic+play.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvMu3QGncQifX4VxYdhHcPW89lMIVQoFLV_33EEC6kTSDzYdydsN9EzQx21Tkt7l1ZD-vG5iqOh7VckKHQbjGKl5Ii6NAUJkeFs8ZrU6A-scvh_S1fwnFpdJMViwzzUKG2PaCZMC6yEbli/s1600/airport+dramatic+play.jpg" height="640" width="434" /></a></div>
<br />
The Frog is super keen on all things transport related so recycled some cereal packets and a big cardboard box into an airport.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3vrmCqiYFReWYcjOGEUSYfDKpaJFqIt-PS8JbUD6-RzJnHXbSPyF7giW3DmAhRKrppssH8rxYBHbJxW00OcFO3vJaAHb6w3Z-R9r6GqueZx71nEklBkHLNoZiDzHpytCgmXSpoo5Uctwu/s1600/airport+play.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3vrmCqiYFReWYcjOGEUSYfDKpaJFqIt-PS8JbUD6-RzJnHXbSPyF7giW3DmAhRKrppssH8rxYBHbJxW00OcFO3vJaAHb6w3Z-R9r6GqueZx71nEklBkHLNoZiDzHpytCgmXSpoo5Uctwu/s1600/airport+play.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The Fairy and I talked about what might be at an airport and searched through our junk box to find appropriate shaped items<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXQgHWH8x4vfIwVzqvuSLzLLC-gjvbz69f__Rib_LPSdfd25wAxj97mfPx8WiDTNuJLIfQAREKYviim5YMDMAV0EoLLMaMN1HKNd5ZrxRHH0YvIUQmdN1wHHtQ4ioJb723N2TDBMu5Si8/s1600/control+tower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXQgHWH8x4vfIwVzqvuSLzLLC-gjvbz69f__Rib_LPSdfd25wAxj97mfPx8WiDTNuJLIfQAREKYviim5YMDMAV0EoLLMaMN1HKNd5ZrxRHH0YvIUQmdN1wHHtQ4ioJb723N2TDBMu5Si8/s1600/control+tower.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>

The summer months are fantastic for being able to get outside and get creative (although the spring, autumn and winter months are too as long as you are appropriately dressed!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPqI9D05HLqBP-SzZbKXxSGb6D9fOtlHHLO_qHG0tt2dhEK860xOBEIzX7WDbFH0L8WJbQO__5Tl7l65bjErY3mToW9CX0WLqOTCA5IEEixVXiHdgi7UmUtIAaaSbfFzYj6ZRORFxZxafd/s1600/creating+with+petals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPqI9D05HLqBP-SzZbKXxSGb6D9fOtlHHLO_qHG0tt2dhEK860xOBEIzX7WDbFH0L8WJbQO__5Tl7l65bjErY3mToW9CX0WLqOTCA5IEEixVXiHdgi7UmUtIAaaSbfFzYj6ZRORFxZxafd/s1600/creating+with+petals.jpg" height="640" width="323" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I'd love to take the credit for this craft but it is entirely the invention of The Fairy and one of her friends. Whilst her friends mum and I were enjoying a cuppa they were quietly playing out side. When we went to check on them they asked for some extra 'making equipment', they wanted to make with some petals they had found fallen on the ground.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9MEDQSOVyNRLN1IlrPJyhUR4J2VXynmkmRGmKE3yCLPFgY4Ha2ylxGkWQ8pIlpkn9SljO_j3MzDA8GjMRWksbqUOW7HVxzqVE1iAdfEi2DpLGGWnh63S0fQtxTGbhcQLSDym3xo4RH9-O/s1600/flower+art+what+you+need.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9MEDQSOVyNRLN1IlrPJyhUR4J2VXynmkmRGmKE3yCLPFgY4Ha2ylxGkWQ8pIlpkn9SljO_j3MzDA8GjMRWksbqUOW7HVxzqVE1iAdfEi2DpLGGWnh63S0fQtxTGbhcQLSDym3xo4RH9-O/s1600/flower+art+what+you+need.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />They had spontaneously created a selection of flowers. Lots of creative thinking, planning and experimenting went on as well as practising fine motor skills. Obviously petal art only lasts as long as the flowers but they had fun.<br />

Because we don't live really close to a Morrison I haven't been in one for ages. When I was offered some vouchers so I could have a shopping trip last bank holiday weekend I was more than ready to give it a try. I heard some talk in the media that they were cutting prices and economic shopping is something that always interests me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg6dAqowNxDtzyZsTRfA6gpi0HWLlRz6suoHuKch-3LSbYhLZvcWshiGD4D51NUrHEjkavIyd82KMVMxzUuefMHxSbV8TcGdIIqFtY1cY048Nu61hT_JfIk1jxr7INDKbAalsrA6n9_fN0/s1600/2014-05-03+20.09.42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg6dAqowNxDtzyZsTRfA6gpi0HWLlRz6suoHuKch-3LSbYhLZvcWshiGD4D51NUrHEjkavIyd82KMVMxzUuefMHxSbV8TcGdIIqFtY1cY048Nu61hT_JfIk1jxr7INDKbAalsrA6n9_fN0/s1600/2014-05-03+20.09.42.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had a lovely surprise when I ventured into Morrisons last weekend. The thing that stuck me the most was the range and freshness of the produce in the green grocery section (including some okra, which will be featuring in a craft post very soon). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicL0BPxEBXnS21zJRBk0lMMuz4rzPcVsyhY0wOckG4HKzkFnG070lDL4Y4_CPboY1aFAEzZRcUwdTrsMhP9cu1fmljNAzpIYoF9b1YCIK7xOhNgrFNeja1NW6V2L-ZGKfMj7cxgSJavn0h/s1600/vegetables.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicL0BPxEBXnS21zJRBk0lMMuz4rzPcVsyhY0wOckG4HKzkFnG070lDL4Y4_CPboY1aFAEzZRcUwdTrsMhP9cu1fmljNAzpIYoF9b1YCIK7xOhNgrFNeja1NW6V2L-ZGKfMj7cxgSJavn0h/s1600/vegetables.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The produce was attractively arranged with little signs telling you about it and giving you tips on how to cook it. Some of the veg was kept extra fresh by a vaporising system, something I had never seen before.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNPrnhC1S8oGoOBcQmSAw97ye5MvQj_4We36oq5kg7vOTkxTR0NWn-bXL3ZqTcUQSnmOhvaO8dQCgfNCqHQcuNUuScRO5yHRl8FK21lpbthw0aZKm9jOtiKce6uOyQj63obGttn5DYBnPU/s1600/vegetable+vaporiser.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNPrnhC1S8oGoOBcQmSAw97ye5MvQj_4We36oq5kg7vOTkxTR0NWn-bXL3ZqTcUQSnmOhvaO8dQCgfNCqHQcuNUuScRO5yHRl8FK21lpbthw0aZKm9jOtiKce6uOyQj63obGttn5DYBnPU/s1600/vegetable+vaporiser.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I stocked up on my regulars plus a few extra treats. I brought all the ingredients for this tasty seafood paella. I'd like to claim that I cooked it, but I can't take the credit. The Papa made it as a bank holiday treat. Paella is perfect food for relaxing and is great for a party. We usually make paella with chicken but the seafood caught my eye and was really economical so we had a seafood paella for a change. The Papa particularly enjoyed this <a href="https://groceries.morrisons.com/webshop/getSearchProducts.do?clearTabs=yes&isFreshSearch=true&entry=chorizio+ring" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">chorizo</a> (which he would like me to point out should be pronounced 'chur -rith - oh' - with no 'z').</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Papa tends to make it up as he goes along so these are rough guidelines. We make it the easy way not authentically (but it is cooked by an authentic Spaniard and tastes lovely!) If you want to try our paella this is what we did:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYoMj6HCNGFu5vq6EwnjqxTdaoGIP_6Y_ubbHoeZkpf_Tep4sDIfliKrgjFQMTOZeJydjFgsVCyDgn25G_LyBSWze8Zt8MWdFfCXVTAHB3iFAGiMdsWHRd3uOuChunCgBzCSVZIZRv1LvZ/s1600/seafood+paella.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYoMj6HCNGFu5vq6EwnjqxTdaoGIP_6Y_ubbHoeZkpf_Tep4sDIfliKrgjFQMTOZeJydjFgsVCyDgn25G_LyBSWze8Zt8MWdFfCXVTAHB3iFAGiMdsWHRd3uOuChunCgBzCSVZIZRv1LvZ/s1600/seafood+paella.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Soften an onion (you don't want to not rush this part as it gives the dish extra sweetness). Cut a piece of cooking chorizo about the same size as your thumb (you want hard chorizo 'ring' for this recipe not the pre sliced chorizo). Peel the paper from the chorizo and cut it into discs. Then add it to the onions. Wait until the paprika colour is released- this means the chorizo is releasing all the flavour. Add some chopped pepper (I found some black sweet peppers which the kids thought were fab, you can use they usual red or yellow if your prefer). Separately cook some rice according to the packet instructions (if you add a pinch of tumeic to the rice it will turn yellow or if you were being authentic you could use saffron). Add a tin of chopped tomato, the cooked rice and seafood unto the chorizo and onions. Add a cupful of cooked peas. Simmer until ready. We made this for £1.21 per portion- bargin!</div>

Process art can be pretty scary if you were taught art should be 'done' in a certain way. Infact it can feel like chaos.The key concept of process art is in the name - it's the process not the product that is the aim of the activity.</h3>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx7FYR1TV6YqwguzIMH6r7g38qQEUYMzE_qiaMhyphenhyphenhbDXFVBTS_QRzHhkFU49b8jYcO6PKQtvWZB3a8pscgjMZ45PZqGkcea-pSsgzz1xO12WhoOxJbm24S_pHQsKd5MHOHICFzUz_fgwSt/s1600/painting+with+eggs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx7FYR1TV6YqwguzIMH6r7g38qQEUYMzE_qiaMhyphenhyphenhbDXFVBTS_QRzHhkFU49b8jYcO6PKQtvWZB3a8pscgjMZ45PZqGkcea-pSsgzz1xO12WhoOxJbm24S_pHQsKd5MHOHICFzUz_fgwSt/s1600/painting+with+eggs.jpg" height="640" width="376" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Egg paint bombing</b> lends it self well to creating in this way. It's perfect for fun with all ages (we had two grown ups, a toddler and a 5 year old joining in with this). They are a<b> messy play</b> painty version of the Mexican confetti filled cascarones</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As we knew it was going to be messy we headed out the forest (and as I wanted to make extra sure no animals were harmed in the making of this art I put down a bin bag to keep the paint off the floor).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7sLhqzRqMdvFOLc6pNfIlcBRc-Glh8fz5ToZ01z80MNYpaRQCMxIZm4st3n8sZjXEFGb4N9IquBLu-rI9d2jU4kSLtYHRqgjJ6kyq2-WKlntR32jNz-sUchuNwbspqfjc3r5vKYT8uDDY/s1600/egg+paint+bombs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7sLhqzRqMdvFOLc6pNfIlcBRc-Glh8fz5ToZ01z80MNYpaRQCMxIZm4st3n8sZjXEFGb4N9IquBLu-rI9d2jU4kSLtYHRqgjJ6kyq2-WKlntR32jNz-sUchuNwbspqfjc3r5vKYT8uDDY/s1600/egg+paint+bombs.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
To prepare for the activity the Fairy helped me to crack a hole in the top of the eggs, empty and wash the eggs. The hole was purposefully large (to aid the filling with paint), we left the filling part till we were outside. Did I mention this activity is a perfect excuse to make cakes too, what with all those egg shells we *had* to do something with the eggs. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Before we threw the first egg we spoke about what might happen. Then we let rip.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyeliQ0bszwSpYYuroeGFIc-aYSq_c68FbwjBvwyPjkdK59N10rlnKkdhvY4lDILfWLbRIxsz4F24RzpX-4UenWtTnNf4KnZqbNX3qPMh41t2spT5rE9Yo4NZl1svFQjStFe7FxLMauYyo/s1600/egg+paint+bomb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyeliQ0bszwSpYYuroeGFIc-aYSq_c68FbwjBvwyPjkdK59N10rlnKkdhvY4lDILfWLbRIxsz4F24RzpX-4UenWtTnNf4KnZqbNX3qPMh41t2spT5rE9Yo4NZl1svFQjStFe7FxLMauYyo/s1600/egg+paint+bomb.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
I was surprised that the eggs didn't break easily - but that led to more throwing. Then we whipped out some paint brushes to do some mixing.</div>

<b>Language Learning:</b> using language to predict and reason (What will happen if you throw the eggs? Why didn't they break? What could you do to make them break?).</div>

<b><a href="http://www.caffecagliari.co.uk/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Caffe Cagliari</a> have recently launched Nespresso compatible capsules in the UK, combining over 100 years of coffee expertise with the latest coffee technology. When they asked what my 'perfect coffee moment' was, I knew it would be tricky to decide. </b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjphrIfvD8HMHerhKLl082QM7i2TsGuq3wCXDf7fYX1KVK4o3A75e2WVvzPs4zl2ItyDDxpCp9Sd4_445o6ecqU05Mnnu4mH8rDa5Ur0gYBVKc_EjgHc8jLB7NpopiSUytjkKnEXCmIech5/s1600/coffee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjphrIfvD8HMHerhKLl082QM7i2TsGuq3wCXDf7fYX1KVK4o3A75e2WVvzPs4zl2ItyDDxpCp9Sd4_445o6ecqU05Mnnu4mH8rDa5Ur0gYBVKc_EjgHc8jLB7NpopiSUytjkKnEXCmIech5/s1600/coffee.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I love 'a coffee and catch up' with friends (show me a speech and language therapist who doesn't like talking -it's in my job description).<br />
<br />
I also enjoy coffee as a 'time out'. I recently went on a parenting course and one of the first tips the trainer spoke about was being aware of your stress levels. She said it was really hard to parent effectively if you were feeling stressed - you are we more likely to shout etc. at the kids. The trainer suggested having a few minutes time out for yourself when you feel like you are starting to get stressed. I find making a coffee an effective time out and it stops me snapping at the kids.<br />
<br />
Another coffee fav is having a coffee and craft session (either by myself or with the kids).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyi-gksX0RaVvdrAJJzWcgl9YLpRrrDBc4ZLwxRv_O2HDwWcgYFz1WpOAP9LSVFtKkZD_xsNeVM-NAyimE2aToJraLZKcEMfX0mmXAZoHxSXlzDjbP5UK7c96wlmxwiwNrcPWPQwKZBVgK/s1600/pipecleaner+flower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyi-gksX0RaVvdrAJJzWcgl9YLpRrrDBc4ZLwxRv_O2HDwWcgYFz1WpOAP9LSVFtKkZD_xsNeVM-NAyimE2aToJraLZKcEMfX0mmXAZoHxSXlzDjbP5UK7c96wlmxwiwNrcPWPQwKZBVgK/s1600/pipecleaner+flower.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I was totally inspired to craft when I saw the shape of the <b>Nespresso compatible capsules</b> Caffe Cagliari comes in. It looks just like a plant pot. So I set about making a really easy recycled flower.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRJrxLp7bKHUyZdcfSYYCEs0inCJgLR01civtLtdZJmdI5Pb-nTwNzJSuZVZShpfgezDymG-5ucUPbhOfETvrW2ictactPVKD9K_DoWqMH-JApjPBlwmbH_R3vUWT6c8QLWNeZ-Ud5xwym/s1600/recycled+flower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRJrxLp7bKHUyZdcfSYYCEs0inCJgLR01civtLtdZJmdI5Pb-nTwNzJSuZVZShpfgezDymG-5ucUPbhOfETvrW2ictactPVKD9K_DoWqMH-JApjPBlwmbH_R3vUWT6c8QLWNeZ-Ud5xwym/s1600/recycled+flower.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I think this would make a cute child made Mother's Day gift or end of term thank you for a teacher. The best bit is it's really easy. Simply bend the pipecleaner, stick it in a cleaned out empty capsule and add the flower. For ease we used foam flowers that were already sticky. If you wanted to get extra creative you could make a flower from card or craft foam.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You might of already heard of Team Honk, a group of UK bloggers raising funds for and awareness of Sports Relief. </div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Team Honk is spear headed by three amazing bloggers who have just been on a trip to Tanzania. To celebrate International Women's Day #iwd2014, Tanya, Annie and Penny have been finding out how donations to Sport Relief last year have created female entrepreneurs and #lastingchange for women, their families and communities and beyond - rippling out #lastingchange in Africa.</div>
<div>

They have sent some digital post cards to us back home. Here's mine . It shows a lady called Joyce.</div>

She has also now built an extension to house another 400 which should be arriving next week. The training that Joyce has received has enabled her to make her own feed, thereby saving her money, and also to ensure the feed is healthy. It has also taught her to recognise signs of disease in her chicks to such an extend that she now has a completely healthy clutch. Other poultry keepers in her area now phone her for advice and training. The network of women is now in a much more powerful position to broker deals to sell to supermarkets as they can promise supply, which Joyce couldn’t do on her own. Joyce is supporting her family and is able to pay for her son to attend a boarding school.</span></span></div>
